Senior Clinical Lecturer/Lead Year 3 or 4 MBChB (Joint Clinical Academic Consultant or Senior Academic General Practitioner or Senior Clinical Lecturer)

The University of Worcester is a high achieving, award-winning, dynamic institution set within an inclusive and engaged community. The number one University in England for gender equality, according to the last three years of the Times Higher Education’s University Impact Rankings, with multiple accolades for teaching quality, inclusion, contribution to the community, and environmental sustainability, the University has been shortlisted as Times Higher Education University of the Year three times in recent years.

One of the best Universities for health education, Worcester has created the distinctive Three Counties Medical School (TCMS), which aims to widen access to careers in medicine and retain graduates in the local area. TCMS welcomed its first cohort of graduate entry MBChB medical students in September 2023 and is now seeking exceptional clinical educational leaders to help deliver Phase 2 of its MBChB programme.

The planned curriculum emphasises problem-based learning [PBL], early patient contact, and an emphasis on community-orientated clinical placements including a longitudinal integrated clerkship in Year 3. Students will take the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA) and have further clinical assistantships in Year 4 preparing them for their Foundation Years training.

The School now seeks to appoint outstanding Leads for each of the years in Phase 2 of the MBChB Curriculum (Years 3 and 4)Lead for Year 3 will be responsible for the operational delivery of the year 3 curriculum, overseeing placement-based learning primarily in the community and the student portfolio, including preparation and coordination of assessments. Lead for Year 4 will similarly hold responsibility for the operational delivery of the year 4 curriculum, overseeing hospital placement-based learning and the student portfolio, and preparation and coordination of assessments including the medical licensing assessment (MLA). To achieve this, the postholders will work closely with placement providers, educators in secondary care, and be supported by the MBChB Assessment, Phase, and Course Leads.

You will be a senior clinician registered with the GMC holding a licence to practise with significant experience of teaching, and assessing within medical education, exhibiting high levels of organisational skills.

Clinical duties are a vital and necessary element of the duties of a clinical academic. These are 0.4fte [4 session/programme activities (PAs)] roles, and the University is anticipating a joint contractual arrangement with an NHS Trust, or Honorary contract provider such as the integrated Care Board, or equivalent relationship with a GP practice or primary care organisation.

For example a Trust could remain the substantive employer in line with the relevant NHS pay scale, and the successful candidates would have an Honorary Clinical Academic contract with the University.

Two posts each of 0.4fte [4 NHS Consultant Pas or sessions]/ part time:

  • Lead Year 3 MBChB available immediately
  • Lead Year 4 MBChB to commence from April 2026

Candidates wishing to be appointed on a joint clinical academic contract may consider either reducing their clinical PAs with a local Trust/General Practice or for external candidates negotiation with local NHS Services to offer clinical PAs may be available within the 3 counties

If you are interested in joining us at this exciting time and would relish the challenge of playing a part in the future development of the Three Counties Medical School as we train the next generation of healthcare professionals, we welcome your application.
